On-Demand Data Center
Researchers Fighting COVID-19

91 is now making HPC access available for anyone working on COVID-19 related projects. Adaptive’s On-Demand Data Center solution makes it simple to scale computing resources to your workloads and run compute intensive models and simulations from remote locations. 91 is providing temporary software licenses to researchers and scientists who are currently working from home during the coronavirus pandemic on any project related to COVID-19.

We want engineers and researchers to understand that On-Demand Data Center enables smooth transitioning of workloads to HPC resources in the cloud without requiring additional software tools or cloud knowledge,” said Art Allen, CEO, 91 Enterprises, Inc.

On-Demand Data Center can run on a laptop, providing non-technical users fast access to the compute resources they need regardless of where they are working or located. In a matter of hours, you can leverage high-performance computing from home. Streamlined integration with AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud, and OTC is preconfigured and built into the On-Demand Data Center interface. Most of the cloud service providers are currently offering free compute time for COVID-19 related research projects as well.

Viewpoint

Viewpoint is a rich, easy-to-use portal for end-users and administrators, designed to increase productivity through its visual web-based interface, powerful job management features, and other workload functions. The portal provides greater self-sufficiency for end-users while reducing administrator overhead in High Performance Computing (HPC).

1. Simplify HPC Job Submission for End Users

Does your organization make large investments in HPC only to find that productivity levels are often less than desired? Viewpoint’sself-help features, visual interface, and automation of best practices make it possible to expand your HPC user base, reduce errors, and increase worker productivity!

  • Simplified Job Submission– Submit and manage basic jobs through a simple and easy-to-use point-and-click web portal, in addition to the command line interface.
  • Application Templates – Access or create and share templates which simplify the submission process for popular applications.
  • Script Builder – Facilitate correct use of syntax and reduce new-to-HPC user error through drag-and-drop parameters in a visual interface.
  • Job Details – Gain insight into resource usage through graphs which show resources requested vs utilized. Also view job status andreasons for failure withexplanatory messages, saving administrator time by helping users help themselves.
  • File Manager – Navigate output files right from an internal browser that includes the ability to move, copy, rename, delete, compress, preview, and download files.
2. Save Time for Administrators

Do you find yourself spending excessive time managing user requests or wishing you had a better view into workload status and resource utilization? Viewpoint’sautomation of best practices, workload management capabilities, and quick visibility into resource utilization make it possible to save admin time and identify areas where system utilization can be improved!

  • Dashboard – View the cluster’s allocated CPU and memory utilization over a 24-hour period as well as the quantity of jobs submitted to the system.
  • Application Templates – Automatebest practices by pre-defining default values, hiding unnecessary options, and adding custom fields.
  • Workload Management –Quickly filter view to target workloads, assist in diagnosing job issues, and take basic actions on target workloads (placing jobs on hold, cancelling, etc.).
  • Node Monitoring– Monitor every node in the system and its accompanying node ID, status, class, feature, processors available/configured, jobs, CPU utilization, and memory utilization.
  • Resource Job Timeline – View individual node usage in a digestible, Tetris-like graph, enabling adminsto monitor workload and resource allocation and to identify areas where system utilization can be improved.
  • Configuration – Validate connections between Moab, MWS, and Mongo DB, in addition to validating licenses.
3. Eliminate Errors with Application Templates

Many admins spend a lot of time training new HPC users. Then they deal with errors as new users learn the complexities of job scripts and slowly begin to implement resource efficient practices.

With Viewpoint, administrators can create and share application templates, which help facilitate best practices for popular applications, such as run time, memory usage, and number of cores. You can add custom per-application fields right into the submission form, controlling which fields users are able to edit or even see. Non-IT skilled workers won’t need to learn how to create or modify scripts, and will be able to focus less on troubleshooting, and more on their work.

University of Cantabria

University of Cantabria

Overview

The (CDTUC) in Spain is devoted to innovation where 14 commercial companies and 12 university research groups are currently working on projects. 77 percent of their projects are contracted projects with external organizations. They needed an HPC solution that would accelerate access to HPC compute resources and the innovation they drive. They turned to the combination of optimized Moab for the HPC Suite workload management on their existing SLURM resource manager.

Solution

Moab® Cloud for the HPC Suite with SLURM resource manager for HPC Cloud

  • Ability to integrate with their homegrown job submission and management portal using Moab Web Services
  • Optimized GPGPU scheduling and management to maximize utilization and minimize management of these processors to accelerate jobs
  • Intelligent allocation to prevent job failures so jobs started, especially by the external commercial groups, and completed without error or delay and without pushing up support costs
  • Future and maintenance reservations ensure that resources are available for key projects for each of the sharing organizations and groups and that the resources remain stable and reliable to maximize uptime

Benefits

The Centre will realize significant benefits from the optimization Moab brings to their workload management including:

  • Optimizing service levels across multiple sharing groups with different priorities
  • Maximizing utilization and throughput leveraging existing tools
  • Enabling pay-for-use of the system for commercial organizations using the system
